1. Tree Cutting Ceremony – Saturday, November 7, 2009.</p>
<p>2. Event site opens at 7:30 a.m.  Musical entertainment begins at 8:30 a.m.  Ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. and will end by 12:00 noon.</p>
<p>3.Event will have Apache Crown Dancers, Apache Blessing and music.  The tree will be cut and placed onto a transport trailer.</p>
<p>4. Event is open to the public.</p>
<p>5. Location site is on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.</p>
<p>6. Location of tree is near Alpine, Arizona approximately 5 miles due west.</p>
<p>7. Parking and Shuttle service to ceremony site at junction of  FS Road 249 &amp; FS Road 276.</p>
<p>8. Free shuttle service is about 10 minutes to site.  Shuttle stop location to the site requires a short walk to the viewing area.</p>
<p>9. Guests are encouraged to wear appropriate walking footwear and warm weather clothing.</p>

<p style="font-size:12px;"><strong>Program Description</strong></p>
<p>Every year since 1970, a Christmas tree has been presented<br />
to the United States Congress from a national forest and is known as “The People’s Tree”. This year, for the first time, the tree will be a gift from Arizona.</p>
<p>In honor of this occasion, the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Arizona Commission on the Arts, and Arizona Art Alliance have collaborated to host a statewide, juried art exhibition to select an official artwork to represent the 2009 National Capitol Christmas Tree (CCT).</p>
<p>Traditionally, the official CCT artwork is presented to the Chief of the Forest Service and will hang in their office for one year. The artwork will ultimately be exhibited in “The Tree Gallery” adjacent to the Chief of the Forest Service’s office in the Yates Building, as part of the national permanent collection featuring previous CCT winners.</p>
<p><strong><span id="more-330"></span>Theme</strong></p>
<p>“Arizona’s Gift from the Grand Canyon State” Artists are encouraged to consider the theme to conceptualize the vision of a 65+ foot tall Arizona Christmas Tree destined for the Nation’s Capitol.</p>
<p><strong>Eligibility and Guidelines</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Open to all Arizona artists, at least 18 years of age.</li>
<li>Any 2-D medium may be used (including but not<br />
limited to: acrylics, oil, watercolor, textile, metals, photography, stained glass, etc.).</li>
<li>Finished artwork should be between 25-35 inches high by 20-30 inches wide.</li>
<li>Finished artwork may be framed or unframed, but must be designed to hang on a wall.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>Received By Deadline: Monday, September 7, 2009</li>
<li>Submit high quality digital image of artwork: jpg format /4&#215;6 inches minimum/300dpi</li>
<li>Image file name: LastName_FirstName_Title.jpg</li>

<p><strong> Review Process</strong></p>
<p>A panel of jurors will review submissions and select artwork for the<br />
Capitol Christmas Tree Exhibition at the Arizona State Capitol during the<br />
month of October. Exhibited artworks will be eligible for the following:</p>
<p><strong>Awards of Distinction</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>“Arizona’s Gift Award.” Selected by the jury panel. The official<br />
CCT artwork will be displayed throughout Arizona, traveling with<br />
the Christmas tree on route to Washington, DC. Artwork will<br />
hang in the Office of the Chief of the Forest Service for one<br />
year and ultimately become part of the permanent collection<br />
at “The Tree Gallery” in Washington, DC. Artist will be<br />
honored at Capitol Christmas Tree festivities in Phoenix during<br />
the month of November.</li>
<li>“Viewers’ Choice.” Viewers will be invited to vote in person or<br />
online for their favorite artwork on display. Artwork will be<br />
displayed throughout Arizona traveling alongside the Capitol<br />
Christmas tree. Artist will be honored at Capitol Christmas<br />
Tree festivities in Phoenix during the month of November.<br />
Artwork will hang in Arizona State Governor’s Office,<br />
becoming part of the State of Arizona’s permanent collection.</li>
<li>“Holiday Greeting Cards.”A selection of artworks will be<br />
reproduced on note or holiday cards and sold to raise funds<br />
for the project. Information about the artist will be printed on<br />
the back of the cards.</li>

<p>We will set the stage for you, giving you history of the tree, the process, pictures of the cutting, the transporting of the tree and the need for hundreds of volunteers it takes to make the tree move from the State of Arizona to Washington, DC.</p>
